A Legendary Meeting

In the year 2001, a band of 17 software development experts gathered one weekend at Snowbird, Utah. A motley crew, united by a single mission to create a new manifesto for software development.

These experts were a diverse bunch with a wide range of experiences and perspectives. Some were grizzled veterans of the “waterfall” wars, while others were fresh-faced starts-ups eager to disrupt the software dev corporate empires. But despite their differences, they all shared a common belief, that there was a better way to build software.

They braved the two days presenting, discussing, brainstorming and skiing... They argued, debated and despite a little frustration they managed their diff’s and agreed on a set of values and principles that would guide the future of software development.

Thus the Agile Manifesto was born. A short document, but profound in its impact on the way software is developed today. Many a millennial and Zgen’er may not realize that the manifesto has guided software organizations to shift the focus from rigid waterfall methodologies to flexible and adaptive, iterative and incremental approaches. Equally important, it emphasized collaboration, communication, customer feedback, respect and trust.
